Sunday, 20 June at 4pm, Soprano, Juliet Petrus with pianist Fugen Wei will present an afternoon of Chinese and foreign art song. The recital will feature Chinese art song masters such as Huang Zi, Qing Zhu and Ding Shande standing alongside Western masters such as Schubert, Fauré, and Bellini, inviting audience members to explore the borderless styles and themes present within this world view of art song.

Ms. Petrus was a member of the inaugural year of the program started by famed Metropolitan Opera bass, Haojiang Tian, iSING! International Young Artist Festival. In 2014, Ms. Petrus decided to focus her energies into becoming a specialist in Chinese art song. In 2015, she recorded the album of Chinese and American art songs, A Great Distance 千里之外, with pianist Lydia Qiu, released on the American classical music label, MSR Classics.

She has also appeared with the Shanghai Symphony, at the National Center for the Performing Arts in Beijing, on CCTV’s annual Lunar New TV Program, ‘Chunwan’ at the Baroquesaal in Vienna, Austria, Symphony Center in Chicago, USA, as well as Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall in New York City.

Ms. Petrus was a proud recipient of M's Literary Residency in 2019-20, gratefully receiving support during and after the process of writing Singing in Mandarin. In 2020, she co-authored the book Singing in Mandarin: A Guide to Chinese Lyric Diction and Vocal Repertoire with Tianjian Juilliard professor and Metropolitan Opera Coach, Katherine Chu, published in the United States and Europe by Rowman and Littlefield. It is the first book to introduce Mandarin as a lyric language to the West, combining explanations, method, and exercises for pronunciation with an overview of repertoire and vocal music history of China.

Juliet Petrus, London-based soprano and author, Juliet Petrus, is respected for her effortless coloratura, and versatile and captivating performances in the world of opera, concert and recital across three continents.

Juliet is thrilled to return to stage in 2021 as Hannchen in Der Vetter aus Dingsda at Stadttheater Baden in Baden bei Wien, Austria. In 2019, Juliet also appeared at Stadttheater Baden as Blondchen in Entführung aus dem Serail. Other recent operatic credits include Aricie in Hippolyte et Aricie with Ensemble OrQuesta for the Grimeborn, for which she was lauded for exuding ‘a purity, both vocally and dramatically.’ Prior to theater closings in 2020, she had just begun a production of Die Zauberflöte as Die Königin der Nacht with Hamburger Kammeroper in Germany, a role she has also sung with Austin Lyric Opera and Lyric Opera of Chicago Opera in the Neighborhoods, both in the United States. Juliet frequently appears as the soprano soloist for Carmina Burana, having sung the work with the St. Louis Symphony, Colorado Symphony, Alabama Symphony and in Suzhou, China. Other recent credits include Gilda in Rigoletto in concert in Shanghai, China, the soprano soloist in Mozart’s C-Minor Mass (Bach Society of St. Louis), Galatea in Acis and Galatea (Union Avenue Opera, St. Louis), the soloist in Vivaldi’s Gloria and Händel’s Te deum (Music of the Baroque, Chicago), and La Musica in Christopher Alden’s production of L’Orfeo (Glimmerglass Opera), with Michigan Opera Theater, at Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, Pritzker Pavilion and Symphony Center in Chicago, Herbst Theater in San Francisco, and with the Shanghai Symphony.  

In addition to her work in Western repertoire, Juliet is recognized as the leading Western interpreter of contemporary Chinese vocal literature. In 2020, she co-authored Singing in Mandarin: A Guide to Chinese Lyric Diction and Vocal Repertoire, published by Rowman and Littlefield. Juliet completed a ten-city solo recital and masterclass tour of China with pianist Lydia Qiu in 2018-19 and also released her first solo CD, A Great Distance: A Collection of Chinese and American Art Song with Ms. Qiu on the MSR Classics label in 2015. 

In 2020, she was recognised by the National Confucius Institute of the United States for her contribution to cross-cultural relations. She was a Confucius Institute scholarship recipient to study Chinese language at Tongji University in Shanghai in 2014 and a member of the iSING! International Young Artist Program in Beijing in 2011 and 2012, which began her love affair with Chinese music and culture. She holds degrees in voice performance from the Northwestern University and the University of Michigan, where she also studied viola performance, working as a professional violist for over a decade. 美国和意大利花腔女高音歌唱家朱丽叶（Juliet Petrus）是在世界歌剧和音乐会舞台上迅速升起的一颗耀眼的明星。凭借她华丽迷人的花腔歌喉，出神入化的表演，以及动人心魄的音乐感染力，朱丽叶赢得了世界各地观众的热情欢迎。

在演唱西方传统的声乐曲目方面，朱丽叶经常受邀演出奥尔夫的Carmina Burana里的女高音独唱。就在最近她还受邀于美国圣路易斯交响乐团，科罗拉多交响乐团合作这部作品，受到评论界的一致赞扬。朱丽叶曾与得克萨斯的奥斯丁抒情歌剧院合作歌剧《魔笛》中的夜后，与Glimmerglass歌剧院合作演出《魔界的奥菲欧》里的尤丽蒂西，以及《奥菲欧》里的艺神，与密西根歌剧院合作《小夜曲》里的Mrs. Nordstrom，《爱之甘醇》里的嘉内塔，以及与圣路易斯的Union Avenue Opera歌剧院合作《雅司与加拉特阿》里的加拉特阿一角。

在 2017年里，朱丽叶成功地在世界音乐之都维也纳成功地举行了个人首演，演唱了美国作曲家 Leonard Bernstein 和 Marc Blitzstein的歌曲。同样在奥地利，朱丽叶受中国著名男高音歌唱家范竞马的邀请，在 Kremsmünster Schloss 举办的第一届中国艺术歌曲夏令营里任教并演唱。12月里朱丽叶再次回到沈阳与沈阳交响乐团同台表演，参加了由沈阳盛京大剧院和辽宁电视台合办的新年音乐会。

2018年，朱丽叶非常兴奋地在中国度过了她第一个中国新年。新年伊始，朱丽叶就在苏州演唱了《布兰诗歌》，以及与苏州交响乐团合作的音乐会和一场个人独唱音乐会。再次受到田浩江老师的邀请，朱丽叶与他携手登上了江苏电视台的舞台去表演。在中国农历除夕受亿万观众关注的的中央电视台《春节联欢晚会》上，朱丽叶用她嘹亮的歌声唱响了《我爱你中国》。在春晚之后中央电视台还播出了对朱丽叶的个人专访，讲述她多年学习演唱中国歌曲的艺术道路与历程。

在2018年里，朱丽叶将十分激动地投身到她的《我爱你中国～朱丽叶个人中国巡演音乐会系列》中去。她将利用这个机会把她对音乐的热忱和激情分享给中国的观众。朱丽叶由衷地相信歌声和歌曲有将人们团结在一起的威力。做为第一位将全部精力倾注到演唱中国歌曲和中国音乐的外国歌唱家，朱丽叶认为她的个人使命就是、让全世界的人民来了解和欣赏这些优美动听的中国音乐作品。

FUGEN WEI, Pianist

At the age of nine, Fugen Wei was accepted into the Primary School of the Shanghai Conservatory as a gifted pianist. He made his solo public debut in the “Shanghai Spring Music Festival”at age twelve.  

After joining the Shanghai Philharmonic Society in 1979, he was appointed  as the official accompanist for renowned Chinese singers in international voice competitions in Vienna and Budapest. He has appeared with these prominent vocal artists in recitals on the "Prague Spring Festival" , Moscow, Hong Kong Culture Centre, as well as throughout Germany, Romania, Former Yugoslavia, and United States.

After immigrating to the United States in 1986, Mr Wei served as accompanist in numerous voice studios in New York City, including the famed voice teacher of the Juilliard School, Rose Bampton,and collaborated regularly in recitals with singers from Metropolitan opera, such as Yun Den, Haijing Fu, Jianyi Zhang, Haojiang Tian, Ying Huang Performing venues included: Carnegie hall in NY, Kennedy Center and Strathmore Hall in Washington D.C, Fort Center in Toronto Canada, Champs-Elysees theater in Paris and Japan.

2005 Mr Wei was the official accompanist for Carlo Bergonzi's “International Voice Master Class”in Beijing. He joined the voice department faculty at Shanghai Conservatory in 2006. He has performed in many state functions of the Chinese government, participating in important culture exchange activities and diplomatic events, such as “Gala- performance at Kremlin Theater in Moscow”hosted by Chinese President Hu Jingtao and Rassian President Putin, and "Welcome State Dinner for President Barack Obama" , hosted by President Hu Jintao. As an educator he made a significant contribution to the young vocal talents in China. Some of them have now joined major opera houses and top Conservatories in the world.  

韦福根九岁考入上海音乐学院附小学习钢琴专业，师从张隽伟等教授，十二岁即在上海之春音乐会中独奏。1969年起，加入战友歌舞团，曾任著名歌唱家马国光，贾士俊的伴奏。1979年进入上海乐团后，曾多次被国家指派为中国歌唱家在国际比赛和演出中伴奏,其中包括胡晓萍等在匈牙利布达佩斯和维也那的国际声乐比赛伴奏，并在布拉格之春音乐节,和欧美多城市的独唱音乐会中担任伴奏。

1986年赴美，受聘於数位声乐工作室 (包括著名朱丽亚音乐学院声乐教授Rose Bampton) 担任伴奏并经常与多位在美的歌唱家合作演出，重要演出活动包括张建一在新加坡，华盛顿，多伦多等地的音乐会。田浩江在丹佛,休斯顿，夏威夷和上海大剧院北京保利剧院的演唱会。廖昌永在卡内基音乐厅的演唱会；黄英在日本的演唱会；由上海市政府为申办世博会在巴黎举办的演出等。曾合作过的歌唱家还包括：傅海静，梁宁，邓韵，张立平，高曼华，祝爱兰，杨光等。 近年来发行的CD包括与戴玉强,郭森合作录制的“陆在易艺术歌曲集”，与张建一，黄英，廖昌永录制的“丁善德艺术歌曲全集”，与廖昌永的“中国艺术歌曲集”。

其他艺术活动还包括：担任意大利歌剧大师贝尔冈齐在“北京2005 国际声乐大师班”的指定伴奏。2006年起应聘为上海音乐学院外籍教授。2007年参加由中俄两国元首主持的在克里姆林宫“中国年”开幕式演出和在圣彼得堡马林斯基剧院的演出，以及在2009年由胡锦涛主席为欢迎美国总统奥巴马访华国宴中的演出。
