Post Truth, Fake News and Social Media:

Where do we go from here?

--a panel discussion

6:30-8:30pm, Wednesday, December 14

Post truth, Oxford English Dictionary’s Word of the Year, jumped into our consciousness during the campaigns over Brexit and the US presidential election.  Campaigners Tweeted unsubstantiated claims or accusations.  Many people gobbled up such red meat and forwarded them with abandon; and, days don’t go by without made-up stories masquerading as genuine news popping up on Facebook, Twitter or WeChat, whether it’s a scandal involving a candidate, a US college president ridiculing Chinese education, or a tearjerker about a sick child.  All fabricated.  Yet, they spread quickly through social media, much akin to a computer virus.  It’s not only the uneducated who fall victims to such exploits.  Even high achieving Ph.D.s fail to distinguish fiction from fact.  Why are objective facts ignored in favor of raw emotion?  Are social media and our shorter-and-shorter attention span to blame?  Why do some trust conspiracy theories more than the mainstream media?  Will societies cease discussing issues rationally?

We’ve put together a panel of veterans in journalism, communication and public relations to share their thoughts on this worldwide phenomenon.  Come armed with questions for the panelists.

Panelists

Rick Dunham

Rick Dunham is co-director of the Global Business Journalism program at Tsinghua University in Beijing. A veteran political journalist and one of America’s foremost authorities on the use of social media for journalism, he is the creator of the popular blog “Texas on the Potomac.” He is a past president of the National Press Club and the National Press Club Journalism Institute.  Rick holds a BA and an MA from the University of Pennsylvania.

Michael J. Jordan

Michael Jordan is a Beijing-based communications consultant, educator, and  storytelling specialist. As an American foreign correspondent, he’s reported from 30 countries over 20 years – mostly in Eastern Europe and Southern Africa. He’s also taught students on four continents: from New York to Hong Kong, from Prague to Lesotho. His communications consultancies have ranged from HIV and maternal-health in Africa, to labor issues and environmental protection in China. He teaches at Renmin University, Beijing Foreign Studies University, and Hong Kong Baptist University, where he’s a seven-time visiting scholar.  He’s helped raise awareness of worker’s rights for the International Labor Organization in Beijing, and currently leads his own Communications-and-Advocacy-through-Storytelling project aimed at youth environmental education: “The Chinese Champions of Environmental Protection.” (China Daily recently featured his efforts.)  Michael graduated from the University of Missouri-Columbia and The New School.

Esmond K.L. Quek

Esmond Quek is the Principal of Ed Bernays brand consultancy, specializing in public relations, brand positioning, advertising, executive visibility, and crisis management.  A veteran of the PR industry, Esmond has held senior positions at Hill & Knowlton, Ogilvey & Mather, Velti and EverBloom.  Esmond has had 20 years of China business experience in various industries, from running British American Tobacco in China, to providing asset management and corporate financing services.  Esmond is a graduate of the Kelley School of Business, Indiana University and an Honorary Research Fellow at Fudan University. He was voted Best Executive in Asia by International Business Award in 2007.

Felicia Sonmez

Felicia Sonmez is an American journalist who has covered Congress, the White House and the 2008 and 2012 presidential campaigns. A 2005 graduate of Harvard University, she was based in Washington, D.C., for six years, including three as a national political reporter for The Washington Post. She has been based in Beijing since 2013, first as a correspondent for Agence France-Presse and then as editor of The Wall Street Journal's China Real Time blog. She is currently studying Chinese full-time as a Blakemore fellow at Tsinghua University's IUP language program. She is a board member of the Foreign Correspondents' Club of China.
