What exactly are sculptures? You could think of them as art in 3D (three dimensions). Sculptures can be made by carving, modeling or placing materials together. They can be made out of stone, wood, day or any other material the artist wants to use! What is unique about sculpting is that it involves touching, the tactile experience, which is one of the most intense and powerful human senses. It is the first way we use to learn about the world and express our needs as infants. We also use touch to experience others' presence. Sculpting, being a three-dimensional activity, offers a different experience than drawing or painting on a two-dimension flat surface. Through sculpting, our students will learn how to create a three-dimensional piece, and that offers a great opportunity for students who are interested more in tactile than in visual sensations. Sculpting allow teens to understand and process their experiences and express their feelings in a playful and creative way.
