This collection is inspired by the original scents of the Forbidden City. Infused with IFRA-compliant fragrance oil and organic soy wax, each candle offers a clean, long-lasting burning.

    The Emperor’s Favourite

In 1728 two Jesuit monks presented the Yongzheng emperor with a host of exotic fragrances, but despite their efforts to impress Yongzheng, the emperor took no liking to their work. Yongzheng made clear that he preferred a strong scent based on balsam wood from an old recipe kept in the Wuying hall of the Forbidden City.

    Concubine's Chamber

When Zhou Jiazhou published the first comprehensive work on fragrances in China in 1641, he described the favourite scent of the Imperial concubine Yang Guifei. Ever since she lived, Yang Guifei has been praised for her beauty and blamed for the fall of the Tang dynasty. We have added lychee to her favourite scent of agarwood, because the emperor was known to make imperial couriers bring his favourite consort fresh lychee from more than 1000 kilometres away.

    Behind the Curtain

The empress dowager Cixi paid great attention to the smell of her chambers, and according to the biography of her servant, Rong, every day several kilos of fresh apples were placed in huge jars to freshen up the old wooden chambers.

    Eunuch Musk

In the Imperial Palace nobody was more aware of smell than the palace eunuchs; because of their obvious inability to control the urine flow, the eunuchs carried small bags of agarwood, musk, and herbs to conceal the sour smell that invariably hung in their clothes.
