The Beijing Zoo dates back to the Qing dynasty. In 1906 the viceroy of Shanxi returned to China from a trip to 17 different countries; he brought back a collection of animals from Germany, which was a present for Empress Dowager Cixi. The animals were kept at a park just west of the old city wall, and the place was, in 1908, opened to the public to become Beijing's first public zoo. During the civil war there were allegedly only a one-eyed ostrich, 12 monkeys, and a few parrots left at the zoo. However, after 1949 the park was restored for the benefit of the people, as can be seen in this picture from 1954; the city had not completely absorbed the zoo yet in the 1950s.

北京动物园的历史可以追溯到清朝。1906年，五大臣出洋归来，端方从德国带回了一批动物，作为献给慈禧太后的礼物。这些动物被安置在古城墙西侧的三贝子花园里，并于1908年向公众开放，成为北京第一家公共动物园。据说，内战期间，动物园里仅剩一只独眼的鸵鸟、12只猴子和几只鹦鹉。然而，解放后，为了让民众受益，动物园得以重建，正如这幅1954年的画作所示。从画中可以看出，当时这座动物园尚未完全被城市所包围。
