In the republican period, everything modern was labelled "new" (新). The idea of a new society developing out of the old feudal state was not only a socialist concept, but after 1949, the idea of 'new China' became almost exclusively a communist term. On this poster, the suffering of the people belonging to the old feudal society is depicted at the bottom of the picture in black and white. The monument of the people's heroes represents the struggle of the masses, and Tiananmen Gate, from where the People's Republic of China was proclaimed in 1949, represents new China. This poster was created by E. Yi (鄂毅) and first printed in 1965.

民国时，一切现代事物都被贴上“新”的标签。从封建国家中发展出新社会的理念并非社会主义所独有，不过1949年后，“新中国”几乎完全成为了一个共产主义术语。在这张1959年的海报上，新旧北京形成了鲜明对比。画面底部以黑白画面描绘了旧社会中人民的苦难，人民英雄纪念碑象征着群众的斗争，正是这些斗争最终促成了1949年中华人民共和国在背景中可见的天安门宣告成立。
