The concept of Model Workers (劳动模范) is a Chinese communist idea dating back to the civil war in the 1930s. Manual labor was traditionally looked down upon in Chinese society; however, to change this, the Communist Party started rewarding model workers of society so that the masses could learn from and even glorify the value of manual labor. The text says, "Strive to be a model worker to achieve the four modernizations." The Four Modernizations was a concept launched by Premier Zhou Enlai in 1954, aiming at modernizing Chinese industry, agriculture, technology, and the military. This poster was created by Li Zhiguo (李志国) in 1980.

“劳动模范”这一概念源自20世纪30年代内战时期的中国共产党理念。因体力劳动传统上一直受到轻视，为了改变这种状况，共产党开始表彰社会中的劳动模范，以便让广大群众向他们学习，甚至颂扬体力劳动的价值。这张海报来自20世纪80年代初期。“四个现代化”是周恩来总理于1954年提出的概念。其核心思想是，中国的农业、工业、工程、科学和军事都应实现现代化；否则，共产主义的最终目标将无法实现。
