在中国封建社会后期，许多女性因“高胸”被视为不雅而束胸以让胸部扁平。然而到了1920年代，天乳协会应运而生，致力于废除这一危害女性健康的陋习。

The Natural Breast Movement. During the last dynasties of China many women bound their breasts flat because “high chests” were deemed indecent. However, in the 1920s, Natural Breast Societies emerged, pushing to abolish this custom due to its negative impact on women’s health.

“双手插兜抽烟的女子”。1914年，《北京政闻报》杂志刊登了一系列描绘现代女性的漫画。封建时期，女性因习俗与裹脚的双重桎梏而困守闺中，这些活跃在外的民国女性因而显得既新奇又具异域风情。

“A woman smoking outside with her hands in her pockets”. In 1914, “La Politique de Pekin” ran a series of caricatures of modern Chinese women. Traditionally confined to courtyards by customs and their bound lily feet, these new outgoing women marked something novel and exotic.
