《紫禁城的黄昏》，作者：庄士敦(1874 -1938年)，英国苏格兰人，本名 Sir Reginald F. Johnston ,中文名庄士敦，牛津大学文学硕士。清光绪二十四年(1898年)来中国，曾先后任香港总督秘书和英租界山东威海卫高级专员等职。庄士敦是一位汉学功底深厚的学者。在中国生活的三十余年里，他广猎经史子集、诗词歌赋，对中国的儒家文化和佛教哲学十分推崇。1919年，经过辗转介绍，进入紫禁城，成了为逊帝溥仪讲授英文的“洋师傅"，直到1924年溥仪出宫为止。这段为期五年的"帝师”生涯，1934年被庄士敦写成《紫禁城的黄昏》一书出版后轰动一时。

Sir Reginald Fleming Johnston(1874-1938)was born in Scotland and received a Master of Arts degree from Oxford University. He arrived in China in 1898 and served successively as Secretary to the Governor of Hong Kong and High Commissioner of Weihai in Shandong Province. During the thirty years that Johnston lived in China, he read extensively in the classics, history, poetry and songs. He appreciated Confucianism and Buddhist philosophy.After various introductions, he entered the Forbidden City in 1919 and became the “foreign master" who taught English to Emperor Pu Yi until 1924. After five years of his career as an “imperial teacher", he wrote the book “Twilight in the Forbidden City", which was published in 1934.
