明代嘉萬皇帝笃信道教，在这一时期瓷器上经常会出现用树木枝干缠绕成的[福]、[夀]、[康]、[寕]等寓意吉祥的字作为装饰，别具特色。

《诗经》作证，可见古语“寿”、“桃”二者音近，以桃谐音寿，是上古语音的历史事实。原来早在《诗经》中就已出现的“万寿无疆"一词，那时的发音竟然是“万tao无疆"，当桃树被纳入“木”德之后，便代表着春天、生机，象征光明和生命，能够驱除黑暗和死亡，桃木辟邪的说法深入人心，助人延年益寿。

Emperor Jiajing and Wanli from the Ming dynasty believed in Taoism, which is why porcelain from this period often depicts motifs with tree branches in which the auspicious symbols ‘fu’(福, blessing),‘shou' (寿, longevity), 'ning' (宁, peace) or‘kang'(康, health) are interwoven. For the Taoists, the peach symbolises boundless life and spiritual transformation.

The ‘Book of Songs', a classic of Chinese folk poetry, testifies that the pronunciation of the words for longevity and peach once sounded very similar. The syllable‘tao' (桃, peach) contains the character for wood (木, mu), which represents spring and vitality in the five-element theory. It stands also for light and life, can dispel darkness and death and helps to prolong life. It has long been anchored in people's hearts that peach wood helps to ward off evil.
