但在老北京有一种非常类似的游戏，叫做"升官发财"，它已经存活了一千年，可惜曾经被当作封建糟粕而被禁止，如今很少有人知道它。据说它起源于唐朝的李贺。

近年来，考古发现，汉代画像砖中已经有了这种游戏的场景，孔家坡出土的汉代画卷很可能是最早的升官棋盘。

该游戏是通过旋转一个陀螺仪来进行的，陀螺仪上有文字。四个字'德、才、功、脏'，当文字停止时，旋转的一面可以变成一个有几个格子的棋盘，每个格子都有不同的官位。第一个到达棋盘中心的"太师，"太保 "或 "太傅 "位置的人就是赢家。如果陀螺停在 "偷"字上，就会被扣分，棋子也会相应地移回。
