The game "Monopoly"

has been popular all over the world, but there is a very similar game in old Beijing called "Official Promotion", which has survived for a thousand years, but unfortunately was once banned as feudal dross and few people know about it today. It is said to have started in the Tang Dynasty with Li He.

In recent years, archaeological discoveries have shown that the Han dynasty portrait bricks already contained scenes of the game, and it is likely that the Han scrolls unearthed at Kongjiapo were the earliest chessboard for the promotion of officials.

The game was played by spinning a gyroscope, which had writing on it. The four words 'virtue, talent, work and spoils', and when the writing was stopped, the spinning side could be converted into a chessboard with a few squares, each with a different official position. The first player to reach the position of 'Tai Shi', 'Tai Bao' or 'Tai Fu' in the centre

of the board is the winner. If the gyro stops with the word "stolen", points are deducted and the pieces are moved back accordingly.

This game helped children to quickly understand the structure of the court at the time,，and it was also a way to teach and entertain them, as they were promoted through "virtue, talent and merit", while corruption was a step backwards.

但在老北京有一种非常类似的游戏，叫做"升官发财"，它已经存活了一千年，可惜曾经被当作封建糟粕而被禁止，如今很少有人知道它。据说它起源于唐朝的李贺。

近年来，考古发现，汉代画像砖中已经有了这种游戏的场景，孔家坡出土的汉代画卷很可能是最早的升官棋盘。
