Daoyin 導引 literally means "guiding and pulling". In Zhuangzi "Carving
Ideas" Li Yi's commentary "guiding" means "leading the qi to make it
harmonious"and "guiding the body to make it soft". According to traditional Chinese medicine, the main purpose is to make the mind flexible and create
harmony between the internal and external environment, thus relaxing,
regenerating and rejuvenating the body. It is considered a precursor to Qigong
and was practiced in Chinese monasteries.
The illustrations were painted on a silk scroll that was unearthed in late 1973 in the Mawangdui Han tomb No. 3 in Hunan, China, dating back to 168 B.C.
Based on the silk book's margins, textures, warp and weft density, and color shading, the fragments were restored to create the complete image, believed to be the oldest guide to fitness exercise in the world to date.
