    When matchsticks came into the Chinese market they represented modernity. They were used to light kerosene lamps that extended the day and lit up cigarettes. Colorful matchbox pictures of everything from lucky charms to beautiful women would soon become collectibles. After 1949, the tradition of colorful matchbox designs was continued, but it was no longer symbols of prosperity. Rather, the designs would feature strong socialist motives of workers struggling for a new society.
