China's engagement with Africa dates back over 600 years, with the explorations of Zheng He of the Ming Dynasty. Porcelain and silk were traded for ivory, myrrh and animals. Today, Africa's trade, investment flows, infrastructure development, and aid are all unquestionably shaped and influenced by China. Indeed, with over $130 billion in trade China has become Africa's biggest economic partner.

Despite this long standing history, the China-Africa relationship is deeply misunderstood on both sides and by onlookers. And with recent trends - Africa's industrialization push, youthful population boom, China's One Belt One Road Initiative, and the increased importance of China's Africa Strategy in China's domestic affairs, this relationship is likely to both deepen and evolve.

In a day-long forum, 'China Africa Stories' aims to break away from the mainstay conferences on Sino-Africa affairs, and explore questions around the changing nature of the relationship from a cultural and human-based perspective, and the role of young people in writing the new chapter of the Sino-Africa story. Through panels led by young professionals, we will aim to answer questions such as:

  • What is the cultural impact of the big ticket numbers of the Sino-Africa relationship?

  • How is Africa shaping and influencing China?

  • What are young people on both sides doing to transform Sino-Africa affairs?

  • As the relationship evolves, what opportunities exist for young people?

We aim to attract and engage youth in China who are enthusiastic and/or curious about Sino-Africa affairs and opportunities to shape and influence its future. Our speakers will be drawn from a pool of illustrious young Chinese and African professionals and entrepreneurs who have through their work and/or businesses have began to contribute to the answers to these questions.
