美式残死终极神团SUFFOCATION窒息四月降临北京

作为又一个在打口带时代就在中国大陆金属迷心中享有神般地位的名字。与同乡CANNIBAL CORPSE一样，1988年成军于纽约的窒息SUFFOCATION在1991年以一张惊世之作《Effigy of the Forgotten》挥刀杀入金属帝国。与那个年代许多佳作一样，专辑在美式死亡金属圣地佛罗里达坦帕Tampa著名的Morrisound Studios由Scott Burns操刀制作，极为复杂扭曲的编排与狂暴肆虐的音墙瞬间撼动了极端金属帝国的坚实地基，同时也顺理成章地使他们成为进入九十年代后死亡金属的领军人物。凭借这张专辑开启了极端金属音乐中最后的天启之门—— BRUTAL DEATH METAL残酷死亡金属。这一点随着乐队第二张作品《Breeding the Spawn》的发行而显现出越发重要的意义。

从一开始，SUFFOCATION的创作就体现出极大的前瞻与包容性，要知道在他们组建的年代，正是流行金属如日中天的岁月，重金属在普通人心目中是GNR与MOTLEY CRUE这样的音乐，而SUFFOCATION则从THRASH METAL , GRINDCORE乃至硬核音乐中汲取养分，开创性的将降调的重型失真吉他音色，兽吼般的演唱，极其快速的鼓击与复杂的编曲相结合，创造出了崭新的音乐风格。而乐队创始成员Terrance Hobbs则是一名黑人吉他手，这在向来被认为是白人音乐领域的金属乐坛极为罕见。

从第三张专辑《Pierced From Within》开始，SUFFOCATION进一步强化了自身特色，重新与Scott Burns合作使得他们在音乐复杂性与侵略性上更上一层楼，更为可贵的是其音乐可听性却丝毫没有受到影响。快速复杂的音符带来汹涌不断的重型音浪，死亡金属的极端重量感与技术流派的复杂相结合得到了更完美的结果，《Pierced From Within》也作为残酷死亡/技术死亡金属的丰碑之作载入史册。

经过近十年的休整，乐队在2004年、2006年以惊人的速度接连发行两张回归之作《Souls to Deny》、《Suffocation》，老而弥坚的死亡金属老炮依然高举二十年前的死亡大旗，将美式死亡金属在新千年里再次推向全新的高度。此时乐队在极端金属界的地位也如日中天，他们的名字几乎占据了所有极端金属媒体和音乐节的头条位置。
