The BISS Puxi Performing Arts Faculty enthusiastically invites you to our Spring production of Brecht’s The Threepenny Opera. The sly melodies of composer Kurt Weill and the daring of playwright Bertolt Brecht come together onstage in this unique and world renowned dark musical comedy.
Set in the impoverished back alleys of Victorian London, The Threepenny Opera follows underworld antihero Mackie Messer (a.k.a. Mack the Knife) as he tries to woo Polly Peachum, the Beggar King’s daughter, and elude the authorities – all whilst keeping his other less savoury lady friends and gang of loyal thieves appeased. At the forefront of his desires though is his ultimate yearning to steal and corrupt his way into the society of the middle class.
With its world of corruption and dread, The Threepenny Opera remains a benchmark of 20th Century Theatre and demands the audience ask the question – ‘Can beggars really be choosers?’ With classic songs including the Swing staple ‘Mack the Knife’, this dark comedy is a show not to be missed. Not only will you be thoroughly entertained, but left to question important issues about the morality of society.
