也就是上世纪70年代,咱们的唱机开始爆发出各种轰鸣的贝斯和强力的节拍,在这些充满能量的喧嚣中有一支来自异星的神秘歌声若隐若现,伴随着炙热的吉他Riff和宏大的管乐编排,在一切刚刚开始的时候,出现了这样一支乐队——Magma。在音乐上我们很难将它们归类,他们怪得彻头彻尾,很难让人相信这是一支纯得不能再纯的法国乐队。但正是这种怪异和充满奇思妙想的创造力,使Magma在1969年第一次登台的那个时刻就已经注定要在现代音乐青史留名了。
爵士、古典、布鲁斯、摇滚和流行,Magma的8位创始成员都是来自各种音乐风格的顶尖乐手,在乐队的灵魂人物——鼓手兼作曲、主唱Christian Vander的带领下,Magma几乎融合了上述所有风格,创造出了一种可视感极强的独特音乐:
“数个世纪之后,人类文明毁灭了,少数人类离开了地球,在一个遥远的行星Kobaïa上建立了新的文明,并与当地的原住民Kobaïa人发生摩擦进而冲突……”
这是Magma第一张专辑讲述的故事。Magma几乎所有的作品都是描述Kobaïa文明的起源和发展,而且用的都是“Kobaïa语”——Magma自己创造的语言!所以,Kobaïa星球上的音乐也是和地球音乐迥然不同的。Magma的音乐非常奇怪,也非常优美,当然他们有自己的体系:Magma运用了极多元的音乐形式,专辑《Mekanïk Destruktïw Kommandöh》是对德国作曲家卡尔•奥尔夫的致敬,《Wurdah Itah》则表现出受到贝拉•巴托克的钢琴音乐与斯特拉文斯基的影响。萨克斯大师约翰•科特兰对Magma亦有着强列的影响。许多从Magma离队的乐手都组了新的或乐风一脉相承的乐队,乐迷们便以Kobaïa语中的“Zeuhl”来称呼这种与Magma相关或直接受他影响的哥特调性 + 前卫爵士 + 迷幻摇滚 + 世界音乐的风格。
1970年和1971年推出了两张专辑《Kobaïa》和《1001° Centigrades》后,Magma成名于1973年发行的专辑《Mekanïk Destruktïw Kommandöh》,一经推出就受到了国内外一致好评,这张专辑也是乐队灵魂Christian Vander的妻子——歌手Stella Vander首次献声的专辑。之后Magma进入了一段高强度创作时期,从1974年到1978年,四年,四张专辑,一部异星史诗!(四张专辑:《 Ẁurdah Ïtah 》、《Köhntarkösz》、《 Üdü Ẁüdü》、《Attahk》)
之后Magma在1983年推出了专辑《Merci》,这是一张充满Soul、Disco和Funk气息,与以往所有作品都不同的“异类”专辑,一张很“80年代”的专辑。这张专辑后他们慢慢停止了创作的脚步,只发行了几张EP和进行了为数不多的演出,忙于副业的Christian以“冷眼旁观”的姿态错过了上世纪八九十年代世界摇滚乐坛的百花齐放,成为乐迷心中的遗憾。
2001年,Magma带来了现场专辑《Theusz Hamtaahk》,用比以往都要好的状态重新演绎了他们经典的三部曲:《Theusz Hamtaahk》、《 Ẁurdah Ïtah 》、《Mekanïk Destruktïw Kommandöh》,同时宣布了他们的回归,带着持续到现今的新阵容——年过半百、已是“欧洲鼓王”的Christian Vander,他的妻子、主唱Estelle Vander,充满破坏力和创造性的吉他手James Mac Gaw,还有贝斯手Philippe Bussonet,以及一队男女声部伴唱——开始了密集的巡演,并通过一场场超越所有人期待的精彩演出,收获了观众对他们“老前卫音乐”的赞叹。
2004年,他们推出了倍受好评的专辑《K.A.(Köhntarkösz Anteria)》,并在2006年至2008年两年间,现场演绎和录制了之前的所有作品。其间Magma黄金时代成员如Jannick Top(后成立了Space乐队,并做过席琳迪翁的制作人)和Klaus Blasquiz(前主唱)都前来助阵……这个叫做“Mythes et Légendes(神秘传奇)”的现场系列大获成功,向世人么宣示了Magma并没有老!
2014年9月至2015年11月,年近70岁的Christian Vander和他的Magma将完成新一轮、也许会是最后一轮的世界巡演——The Endless Tour,如果一定要翻译成汉语,你可以理解为:无穷无尽!
这支成立于1969年的传奇乐队还将继续传递他们无穷无尽的前卫狂想。
It was in 1970 that the explosive compound of cavernous bass and a hammering beat erupted from our record players, as an otherworldly voice chanted in a mysterious language, the sound swelling with incandescent guitar riffs and the full force of a brass section. Thus began a first, double album, quite simply entitled MAGMA. Musically unclassifiable, resolutely odd and psychedelic with a fondness for sci-fi imagery, the group is nevertheless a landmark in the history of music, not least because of its audience, drawn from local youth and arts centers as well as alternative venues. Magma's music is very strange, beautiful, and ultimately rewarding, but it does require an open mind on the part of the listener. It is music that must be experienced fully with body, heart and soul: not simply a cerebral performance of some kind of space opera by clever musicians, but a full blown spiritual experience with the music acting as the connecting vehicle between performer and listener.
Hailing from diverse musical backgrounds such as free jazz, classical, blues, progressive rock and pop in combination with their own compound of experimental symphonic rock music, the eight founding musicians had all the talent required to bring this unique and visionary music to life under the leadership of virtuosic drummer, composer and singer Christian Vander. Together they succeeded in fusing together various music styles and forming an impressive as well as innovative collective - each of whom thrived and excelled within the group. So common was it for musicians to subsequently launch their careers as sidemen or soloists that people sometimes refer to the Magma school of music. All of Magma’s music tells various stories of the planet Kobaïa, which is settled by refugees from Earth in some distant future. And most of it is sung in a made-up language called “Kobaïan”, which fans of Magma have actually learned to decipher and speak to one another! Magma’s music and Vander’s Kobaïan language have even inspired their own sub-genre of music, called “Zeuhl,” which is Kobaïan for “celestial.”
During 1970 and 1971, Magma composed their first album entitled “Kobaïa” and “1001 Centigrades”, but it was in 1973 that the band gained international recognition with the album “Mekanïk Destruktïw Kommandöh”. This was the first album to also feature Stella Vander’s incredible voice and is often called Magma's musical peak. It's definitely like no other record ever made… Magma experienced its most intense period of work from 1974 to 1978, when they produced 4 albums in 4 years (“WurdahÏtah”, “Köhntarkösz”, “ÜdüWüdü” and “Attahk”) and then returned in 1985, after a short break, with the album “Merci”. This album features tracks full of soul, disco and funk influences and is a typical eighties production. Magma then had a short break during the 80-90 period, as Christian Vander was working on other projects.
In the year 2001 Magma-fans from all over the world celebrated the return of the band and the live document “Theusz Hamtaahk” was released, covering the complete MAGMA trilogy (“Theusz Hamtaahk”, “WurdahÏtah” and “Mekanïk Destruktïw Kommandöh”) played live in great shape. Quickly the band regained a top-notch reputation giving gigs of unbelievable precision and intensiveness for the avant-garde public. The new reincarnation would feature Christian Vander, seen as one of the best drummers in the world, Estelle Vander, guitar-player James Mac Gaw, bass-player Philippe Bussonet and a short list of male and female vocalists.
The highly acclaimed 'K.A.' (“Köhntarkösz Anteri”) followed in 2004. Then in the years 2006-2008 the band set out to play and record Magma pieces from throughout their career in a live setting, resulting in four of live-footage of all Magma-era's with appearances of former band-members such as Jannick Top and Klaus Blasquiz. This ´Mythes et Légendes´ series was extremely well received by fans of the band and proved that they could still faithfully reproduce all its pieces, even the avant-prog /fusion pieces from the first two albums.
A series of classic Magma titles has been scheduled for release every month from September 2014 to November 2015. A legendary French group if there ever was one, Magma has therefore continued to influence the course of contemporary music since their debut in 1969.
From September 2014 to November 2015, the now almost 70 years old Christian Vander and Magma have planned a new – and maybe last – concert tour all over the world, called “The Endless Tour”.
