The talk from the speaker will be for engineers and aspiring engineers. We've specifically asked the speaker to not have a slidedeck and answer questions about his engineering team using actual code examples and infrastructure details. Audience is warned that they might expect to see some warts and imperfections as we look behind the curtain of a real engineering team.

About the speaker

Alex taught himself design and the basics of programming while still in high school then went to study Zoology at university. After this he came to Shanghai where he has spent the past 10 years honing his design & development skills. His focus these days is on UX, but he still believes that good UX comes from a deep knowledge of how products are built.

Workshop: building and using visual components

What?

Use pure CSS to create your user interface widgets; build your own button from scratch using only CSS. Store the code in your own repository on Github and get a chance to have it used by Kawo.

Why?

Easily add a class to a div to get a rich user experience. Compares advantageously to SVG (need to animate using Javascript) and removes dependencies on external image assets.

What you need to be familiar with before the workshop:

git source control basics (https://try.github.io
CSS: before, after, rotate, animate, box shadow (tutorial?)
