This year’s Senior Production is based on the age-old tale of Romeo and Juliet, a romance of star-crossed lovers.

BISS Puxi’s West Side Story has been adapted from a story set in 1950s New York, about the conflict between Americans and Puerto Ricans, to a tale set in the early 1970s amidst the turmoil of the US’ involvement in the Vietnam War.

The story was entirely adapted by the senior students over the course of the year, using original devising and collaboration techniques, envisioning not only the concept but the script itself. Everything from script, to songs, to set, to costumes was designed and carried out by the students, under the guidance of Marta Cotrim, Head of Drama.

Summary

Set in Verona High School, Washington DC, in the year 1971, the militarist Jets and the hippie SHARKS fight for the right to express their beliefs and views on the growing issue of the US’ involvement in Vietnam, an overseas civil war. In the midst of the rising tension, Tony, the former leader of the Jets, and Maria, the SHARKS’ leader’s younger sister, fall in love. After meeting for the first time at the school homecoming dance, Tony and Maria must hide their forbidden love from an unforgiving community.

At the peak of the tension, the Washington Monument March, tragedy strikes. Riff and Bernardo, leaders of the Jets and SHARKS, respectively, fall leaving Tony holding the murder weapon. Now, blamed for Bernardo’s death and believing the love of his life to have left him for good, Tony enlists and leaves for Vietnam. Maria, having returned to her hometown to say goodbye to her brother forever, discovers that Tony was killed in the war.

Flashforward to 1991 – Maria speaks out to the United Nations about the US’ involvement in another foreign affair: the Gulf War in Iraq, and questions the morals and consequences of violence and war worldwide.
