Part I, Dinner & Discussion: Join us for an intimate dinner and discussion with well-known North Korea expert, Andray Abrahamian.  For years, Andray has been hosting women leadership programs in North Korea, training young female managers and entrepreneurs with core business skills, and enabling the best candidates to set-up or grow their business in North Korea. 

Part II, Mentor North Korean Women: Meet and mentor the young women entrepreneurs from North Korea that Andray will bring to Beijing in the fall of 2014.  Join us as a mentor and collaborator and help young women build their businesses, giving both life advice and professional guidance.  Event details TBD, so stay tuned!

North Korea in Flux: Gender, Social Mobility and Business

Each one of us has some image of North Korea in our heads. It has forced its way into our imaginations, yet so many developments in North Korea's economic and social relations are either ignored or misinterpreted. One of the huge changes in North Korea revolves around the roles of women and the role of business and trade in society. After training over 350 North Korean participants since 2010 in Business and Entrepreneurship, Financial Sector Development, and Economic Policy and Strategy, Choson Exchange has developed a unique and on-the-ground perspective of these changes. Since 2012, it has been running a women in business program, though which it attempts to support and encourage female entrepreneurs and managers as they navigate new options in career development.

Andray Abrahamian became interested in Korea issues following a trip to the DMZ in 2003. This inspired an MA in International Relations from the University of Sussex. He then earned a PhD focusing on Western media and images of North Korea, while teaching International Relations at the University of Ulsan. He has published various academic and op-ed articles and been solicited to offer commentary by international news broadcasting organizations. His academic interests include intercultural relations, post-colonialism, Orientalisms, hegemony and US-East Asian relations. He currently works full time as Executive Director of the Singaporean non-profit Choson Exchange, running programs focused on business, economic policy and law for young North Korean professionals.
