Join AIA Shanghai and Xi'an Jiaotong Liverpool University for this lecture by architect Nuno Fonterra, Associate Partner at noted Dutch firm Mecanoo.
The lecture will focus on Mecanoo’s recent built work. It will include 3 main projects in detail and a resume of the work from the point of view of these principles: PEOPLE, PLACE, POETRY.
Discovering unexpected solutions for the specifics of programme and context is the foremost challenge in all assignments. Mecanoo treats each project as a unique design statement embedded within its context and orchestrated specifically for the people who use it. Preoccupied not by a focus on form, but on process, consultation, context, urban scale and integrated sustainable design strategies, the practice creates culturally significant buildings with a human touch.
Associate Partner, Mecanoo
Nuno actively contributes to the scope and quality of Mecanoo’s portfolio of work having engaged on numerous award-winning cultural projects and competition entries. Highly creative, innovative and flexible, Nuno has propelled the conceptualization and design development of many of Mecanoo’s most innovative and sculptural projects including the National Kaohsiung Center for the Arts (Wei-Wu-Ying), Taiwan, Three Cultural Centres and One Book Mall, China and La Llotja Theater and Conference Center, Spain, amongst others.
He has also led multiple competition designs including the Nobel Qur’an Oasis, Saudi Arabia; Xiqu Theare, Hong Kong; Urban Waterfront Development/Mediaspace Library, Aarhus, Denmark; and an urban campus for the European Space Agency, Germany. Nuno aims to enhance the context of an intervention by relating each project firmly to the landscape.
Nuno is active in academia, including teaching at the Delft University of Technology and the Piet Zwart Institute in Rotterdam. He has also taught a design studio at Soongsil University in Seoul.
