This presentation will introduce readers to the speaker's Eight Juxtapositions: China through Imperfect Analogies from Mark Twain to Manchukuo, which came out last year from Penguin and is made up of a series of short and often playful commentaries on culture and politics. Speaking right after flying to Beijing from California, he will also discuss recent developments in U.S.-China relations and current American views of the PRC.

Jeffrey Wasserstrom is Chancellor's Professor of History at the University of California-Irvine, the author of five books and the editor or co-editor of several others, including The Oxford Illustrated History of Modern China (2016).  He has been traveling to China for thirty years and writes for a wide range of newspapers and magazines, ranging from TIME to the TLS, the Wall Street Journal to the Los Angeles Review of Books.

Ian Johnson writes features and essays for The New York Times, The New York Review of Books and The New Yorker, amongst others, and is the author of Wild Grass, and A Mosque in Munich, and the soon-to-be-released The Souls of China: The Return of Religion After Mao.
