Did you know that the main ruins of Yuanmingyuan - the 'Western Style Palaces' - were designed by two Jesuit priests as a pleasure garden for the Manchu rulers? Or that British and French troops even stole some of the imperial pets before they began destroying it in 1860? Few realise that the Forbidden City was the French troops' original target before they were persuaded otherwise! Today the Old Summer Palace's broken pillars, crumbling marble foundations and abandoned archways are a beautiful but haunting reminder of China's "Century of Humiliation" - and the perfect jumping off point for a discussion about how the events of the era shape how China views the world today. You'll ramble on foot through the overgrown ruins and travel by boat across its beautiful lake. This is one of Beijing's most fascinating sights, but one few bother to explore - a true hidden historical gem of the city.
