Set during the mid-19th century, The Ibis trilogy, comprising of Sea of Poppies, River of Smoke, and Flood of Fire deal with the trade of opium between India and China. Ghosh fictionally recreates the events leading up to the first opium war of 1839-42, in a narrative that is dramatically enticing and includes an array of characters and cultures. The first volume, Sea of Poppies, draws our attention to the grim reality of opium production and its social impacts. River of Smoke, transports the reader to the opium’s destination, Canton, and the growing tension between the Chinese authorities and the traders. Flood of Fire, the final instalment, shows how the social and commercial tensions that have been built up during the previous novels finally crescendo to a full-blown conflict.
