IN CONVERSATION WITH MICHAEL SPAVOR

Saturday, March 24, 12 noon | 60 RMB | BW24-12

Michael Spavor has spent more than 20 years living and working in the Koreas. His work has focused on cultural exchange, developmental assistance and ethical, non-sanctioned business promoting ties between the DPRK and the rest of the world. He became friends with DPRK leader Kim Jong Un in 2013 after organizing two visits to Pyongyang by former professional basketball player Dennis Rodman, the highlight of which was a friendly basketball game between the DPRK national team and American former NBA stars.

He oversaw the restoration of the 6th-Century Ryonggwang Pavillion in Pyongyang in cooperation with the Dutch Royal Family’s Prince Claus Fund. Michael is currently co-organizing a DPRK Foreign Ministry delegation visit to Canada later this year to study cost and energy-efficient architecture and design methods to benefit housing projects in colder rural areas, among other professional and person to person projects and exchanges. In this event he will discuss his experiences in North Korea over the past two decades and how he came to be playing a key coordinating role in the DPRK.

Michael Spavor originates from Calgary, Canada and has spent more than 20 years living and working in the Koreas.
