How does imperial management compare with today? The institutions of New China are deeply rooted in the imperial management style, and China of today is facing many of the exact same problems that the dynastic governments were confronted with.
A Corporate Look at the Forbidden City is a comprehensive look at economy and power within the Imperial Palace. The walk uncovers the management principles of the Great Within and the traditional Chinese ideas of leadership.
Was it possible for an official to avoid corruption? How could an official speak up against an emperor? How did the Forbidden City generate revenue? How was history written? How could you present the Imperial government with a petition? Why was approaching an Imperial procession a greater crime than receiving money under the table? How were prices on the market controlled during the Ming and Qing dynasties? Why is the Chinese salt monopoly the oldest in the world?
Where our walk A Crash Course to the Forbidden City provides a basic understanding and timeline of the development of the Forbidden City, A Corporate Look at the Forbidden City goes deeper into the different institutions and the meaning of power in a Chinese context.
Note: for those have not yet been on our Forbidden City tours, we'd recommend our A Crash Course to the Forbidden City first.
