Common ways to restore porcelain are plaster, Dance Drill and Kintsugi. Plaster restoration is now commonly used for restoration in museums, while folk restoration is dominated by Dance Drill and Kintsugi techniques. According to the holes preserved on the fragments of ancient ceramic specimens found in Chinese archaeological sites, at least in the Song Dynasty, the ceramic restoration level of porcelain handicrafts was very high. Due to the advancement of modern porcelain restoration concepts, Kintsugi has become more and more popular among the public. . The original intention of our workshop is to let participants know the profoundness of Chinese ancient ceramic culture by touching ancient porcelains that have traveled through thousands of years, and have a "dialogue" with the broken ancient artifacts.
Schedule:
The event will be held in our studio "Qiankun Kongjian", which is located on "Yangmeizhu Xiejie", an ancient hutong in the Qianmen area. We decorated the inside and outside of the studio with ancient porcelain. We will take you for a tour of our workshop, where you will have the opportunity to see a variety of jewellery and decorations made from ancient ceramic pieces.
Before the experience starts, we will present the history and background knowledge of "Kintsugi", and the tools used in the restoration process of "Kintsugi", such as: lacquer, glutinous rice flour, tile ash, pine wood , pure silk and other materials. Before starting Kintsugi, we will invite you to experience the use of the traditional Chinese Dance Drill tool.
Next, we invite you to participate in the process of repairing "ancient ceramic":
1. How to bond broken ancient ceramics (choose a leaf plate of your own);
2. Fill the missing parts of ancient ceramics (use silk wool or wood chips to fill the gaps);
3. Polishing and grinding dried lacquer (learn how to use sandpaper);
4. How to apply gloss paint and pure gold powder (choose a piece of your own ancient ceramic tile and DIY red gloss paint).
