Discussing the Impact of Technology on Society Through Films

If a movie lasts more than two hours, but doesn’t bore you a single minute, then director Alexander Payne, known for brilliant work like Sideways and About Schmidt, must have done something right. And damn, he has done something seriously right this time! Downsizing with Matt Damon as conformist lower middle-class American work therapist and Christopher Waltzas bourgeoisie Serbian business man might well be the movie of the year 2018.

We find ourselves in the close, not too far future and it takes a while until we realize that this movie is indeed a bit sci-fi. Overwhelming news of natural catastrophes make Downsizing look like an unpleasant documentary made in the same year of the film release. It is only close to the end that we understand Payne’s stroke of genius. He offers ethnological solution to the environmental crisis (sci-fi) and simultaneously brings forward undeniable evidence that technology can’t solve the crisis (psychological realism).

We are not surprised that reviews of this film are mostly ambivalent: they either miss Payne’s message entirely or recognize the prophesy of undeniable truth. Join us to discuss this masterpiece and let us know if the human condition and its impact on the planet can find a solution through technology.

我们会发现未来并不遥远，我们需要一段时间才能意识到这部电影确实有点科幻。 压倒性的自然灾害新闻使得同一年发行的纪录片电影《缩小人生》变得不那么令人愉快。只有当电影接近尾声，我们才理解到佩恩的天才之笔。 他为环境危机（科幻）提供了民族学解决方案，同时提出了无可否认的证据，证明技术无法解决危机（心理现实主义）。
