"The Big Short" Adam McKay - 2015
27th October, 2020
Join us for the 20th installment of the 4M Impact of technology on society. This time we look at the impact that technology can play in the development and collapse of complicated financial systems. Based on Michael Lewis best selling book, this movie delves into how the proliferation of financial instruments led to the world's leading financial institutions being overexposed to mortgage backed securities. Especially how the confluence of misaligned incentives and bad actors has and could continue to lead to the collapse of our fiat money systems. Can technology be the fix or is it part of the problem?
Plot
This movie follows three main narratives of Michael Burry, FrontPoint Partners & Brownfield Capital. Michael, an eccentric hedge fund manager, discovers that the United States housing market, is extremely unstable. Anticipating the market's collapse he takes a short position on the market, for substantial profit should his prediction hold true. Soon Jared Vennett & FrontPoint understand Michaels analysis and follow suit. Brownfield capital serendipitously finds a presentation that convinces them of the same, they also take significant risk in betting on systemic failure at great personal cost.
