PAPA's Time Machine is director Maleonn’s first dramatic work. The script is based on the ordinary life experiences of Maleonn and his father. Papa's Time Machine is a non-conventional puppet performance, leading the audience into a world brimming with poetic fantasies. The ingenious combination of live performance and puppet show brings the charm of installation art, moving images and live music performance into full play, imbuing the once-familiar puppet show with a contemporary touch.

Maleonn is one of the most influential visual artists working in China today. He has held solo exhibitions in over thirty countries around the world, including France, Britain, Italy and Germany. His work is reported frequently by important international media such as The Guardian, Daily Mail and BBC.

After 2 years of production research, Maleonn led the team to combine the performance of human actors and puppets, rendering a vivid lifelike depiction of a child's great childhood and family harmony. The team has invited artists from Hungary and Germany to co-produce, and has taken two years to manufacture more than ten large puppets which have lifelike proportions and consist of more than 1200 parts.

PAPA's Time Machine is a commissioned work for this year's China Shanghai International Arts Festival. The work was selected as a recommended performance by the International Society for the Performing Arts in its 2016 annual meeting. In the past 10 years, Papa's Time Machine was the only selected Chinese drama, which was scored first by the judges and has attracted wide attention because of its outstanding performance.

Theatre Above is a new 699-seat theatre facility in the heart of Shanghai, designed by the celebrated theatre artist Stan Lai and dedicated to the advancement of theatre art in the Chinese speaking world.

Located on the 5th floor of Metro City, a shopping mall in the heart of Shanghai's Xujiahui business district, Theatre Above presents a new concept by integrating the finest theatre within a modern hub of shopping and dining.

The fruit of six years of planning and construction, Theatre Above will serve as a home base for the works of Mr. Lai's Performance Workshop theatre group, the works of PW's sister group Magnificent Culture, and a showcase for the best local as well as international theatre. It offers the people of Shanghai a refined and intimate theatre-going experience, and conveys a new attitude about how theatre can be integrated into life.

China Shanghai International Arts Festival (CSIAF), which is hosted by the Ministry of Culture of the People's Republic of China and organized by Shanghai Municipal People's Government, is the only state-level International Arts Festival in China. Since 1999, CSIAF, driven by the concept of “innovation and development” with the emphasis on brand-effect development, has grown into a flagship project for cultural exchange of the country as well as one of the most influential festivals in the international art circles.
