LITTLE SOLDIERS: AN AMERICAN BOY, A CHINESE SCHOOL, AND A GLOBAL RACE TO ACHIEVE
A book talk with Lenora Chu
moderated by Nathan Vanderklippe

Friday, March 9, 6 pm | 60 RMB

Lenora Chu, an award-winning American journalist, presents her hard-hitting exploration of China’s education system. When she enrolled her son at the age of three in China’s state-run school system, the results were initially positive—but she also began to notice troubling new behaviors. Wondering what was happening behind closed classroom doors, she embarked on an exploratory journey, interviewing Chinese teachers, parents and education experts, and following Chinese students at all stages of their education. Lenora’s eye-opening investigation challenges assumptions and asks to consider the true value and purpose of education. Published by HarperCollins in Sep 2017, Little Soldiers was a NYTimes Book Review Editors' Choice and earned a rare five-star review from the South China Morning Post. "The best book I've read about education in China," wrote Peter Hessler of the New Yorker. Lenora will be in conversation with Nathan Vanderklippe from The Globe and Mail.

Lenora Chu is an award-winning journalist and author of the upcoming book Little Soldiers, the story of her parenting journey inside China's school system. Her stories and essays have appeared in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Cut / New York magazine, The Australian, APM's Marketplace and PRI's The World. Born in Philadelphia and raised in Texas, she and her husband Rob Schmitz, NPR’s Shanghai correspondent, have two young sons.
