Kusina ni Kabayan (KnK) is a non-profit Filipino group that hosts fundraisers for Filipinos needing assistance and organizes community projects that help entrepreneurs market their products in Beijing and across China. Since its inception, KnK has grown to include more than 260 Filipino members and has held gatherings and joined international food festivals, including the Beijinger's Hot & Spicy Festival in April 2018.
KnK's Pamilyang Pinoy Autumn Family Day beneficiary is Postcards From Disasters (PFD), a Filipino group that has documented the lives and struggles of the survivors of Super Typhoon Haiyan in Tacloban City since 2016. KnK will also display some of the photographs and postcards at a special viewing area during the family day.
Now in its third year, PFD brings the photographs taken by some young survivors to an exhibition at SM City Cebu on November 8, 2018, the fifth anniversary of the onslaught of Super Typhoon Haiyan on Central Philippines.
In an interview with CNN Philippines, PFD organizers said they have three goals in their project:
- Empower the community;
- Raise awareness and bring stories of the survivors into a public space, through a social media-driven campaign; and
- Affect policies and bring the participants’ practical experiences to the attention of lawmakers, who can work on creating or amending laws that would prevent a Haiyan situation from happening again.
PFD says the funds they receive are being used to print more postcards and bring the photo exhibitions to more cities across the Philippines in the hopes of achieving their goals and eventually help affected communities rebuild their lives after the disaster.
Half of the proceeds of the Pamilyang Pinoy Autumn Family Day will be donated to PFD. Interested individuals may also send their donations to KnK.
