"Robot & Frank" by Jake Schreier, 2012
1th September, 2020
Join us for the 13th installment of the 4M Impact of technology on society as we turn our gaze to the nature of companionship and whether robots could replace the bonds which we create with other humans. Director Jake Schreier and writer Christopher Ford set this heartwarming tale in the near future where Frank Weld lives out his twilight years until his son gets him a robot companion.
Plot
Frank's son Hunter, with his own life and responsibilities, grows weary of trekking once a week to visit his father. He is reluctant to put his father into a full-time care home, so he does the next best thing and buys him a robot companion, which is programmed to keep Frank stimulated with a fixed daily routine and cognition-enhancing activities like gardening. At the start Frank is wary of the robot's being in his life, but he warms up to his new companion when he realizes the robot is not programmed to distinguish between legal recreational activities and criminal ones, and can assist him in his after hours activities.
