• Cultural Heritage in Practice Lecture Series

SOLD OUT!

BEHIND THE SCENES:

Restoration and Re-use in Beijing’s Hutongs

Note: This event will be held in English

* PANEL DISCUSSION WITH ARCHITECTS

* REAL CASE STUDIES
* VISIONS FOR THE FUTURE
  OF BEIJING’S HUTONGS

Preserving Beijing’s hutongs is no easy task. Ancient structures crumble without proper care and old buildings are overcrowded with tenants. Yet, the hutongs remain an essential feature of Beijing’s unique culture. How can the hutong architecture be updated to meet current needs?

How do Beijing's architects view this challenge?

CHP has invited four, Beijing-based architecture firms to address these questions. The speakers will share what happens behind the construction fences: how they work with historic materials, local communities, and new residents to create new spaces in the hutongs. Each architect will present a case study from their firm’s work in Beijing – sharing their insider perspectives on renovating Beijing's ancient architecture.

Caochang Courtyard Houses Renovation (Crossboundaries)

Since launching in November 2016, the Cultural Heritage in Practice Lecture Series has held seven public lectures. Each lecture has featured preservationists, architects and scholars who have shared their experiences in preservation with the audience. This event, featuring three former speakers, will mark the conclusion of the series.

Speakers

Nicola Saladino (reMIX)

Nicola Saladino graduated in Architecture at the Polytechnic University of Barcelona and in 2010 he obtained his Master degree with distinction from the Landscape Urbanism program at the Architectural Association in London. He has carried out several workshops in the Architectural Association and has been invited to numerous international universities such as MIT, Veritas (Costa Rica), Hong Kong University and Tsinghua University, where he was involved in the Landscape Urbanism program. He was also a tutor at Beijing LCD (Laboratory for Computational Design) and is currently teaching in the International Foundation Course at Beijing Central Academy of Fine Arts. As a designer he worked in several offices in Barcelona, London and Beijing on urban design and architecture, including Plasma Studio and Groundlab.

Hao Dong (Crossboundaries)

Hao Dong holds a Bachelor degree in Architecture from the Beijing Institute of Civil Engineering and Architecture, and a Masters degree in Architecture from Pratt Institute, New York, USA. In 2002, he returned to China and started practicing and teaching after living and studying in the United States for almost 5 years. Besides working in one of the biggest state-owned design enterprises, Beijing Institute of Architectural Design (BIAD) since 2003, Hao Dong co-founded the practice of Crossboundaries, based in Beijing. He is regularly teaching at the Central Academy of Fine Arts (CAFA) and recently also at Tsinghua University, Hao Dong is managing director of the Crossboundaries office in Beijing.

Hannah Wu  (People's Architecture Office, "PAO")

Beijing-based People's Architecture Office (PAO) / People's Industrial Design Office (PIDO) was founded by He Zhe, James Shen and Zang Feng in 2010, and consists of a multi-disciplinary team of architects, engineers, product designers and urbanists. With the belief that design is for the masses the studio focuses on social impact through design. PAO is the first architecture practice in Asia certified as a B-Corporation and serves as a model for social entrepreneurship. The studio’s works have been shown at the Venice Architecture Biennale, Rotterdam International Architecture Biennale, the Harvard Graduate School of Design, and has been exhibited in cities including New York, London, Milan, Seoul, and Hong Kong. Hannah Wu, PAO's Director of Communications, will give this talk.

Benjamin Beller (BaO Architects)

BaO is a Beijing-based architecture studio founded in 2010 by French architect Benjamin Beller. The studio operates under the strong belief that it is through acting and engaging with both research and design simultaneously that architecture becomes constructive.  Through writings, speculative projects, installations, architectural design, urban and strategic planning, BaO systematically tries to advocate a bold and playful architecture. Benjamin Beller recieved his architectural education in Strasbourg, London and Paris. He first came to China in 2005 where he worked with Beijing architecture studio Atelier 100S+1 while pursuing his own research on rapidly developing Chinese cities. In 2008, he established aYa office in Beijing with Chinese architect Xu Yixing and in 2010 set up his own practice BaO as a collaborative platform engaging in China and abroad.
