Since coming to China from the US in 2005, Dr. Mark Levine has taught lectured, sung and traveled in 26 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities. As a sociologist, teacher, songwriter, singer and author of Stories from My Chinese Journey, he has been an invited speaker at 30 Chinese universities, written more than 70 American country/folk style songs with lyrics about his observations and experiences in China.
His musical performances have ranged from NCPA to the Shanghai EXPO to a 900-year old theater in Fenghuang, Hunan to the three-armies military base to nearly two dozen weddings and several shows with audiences of 40-50,000. His life and work in China has been reported on in China Daily, Global Times, Renmin Ribao, International Talent Magazine, The Beijinger, Beijing Radio, CRI and dozens of other newspapers, magazines, websites and radio stations. He has also been the subject of more than a dozen video documentaries.
Since 2013 his guitar has been joined with the er-hu playing of Hubei-born Fu Han in the cross-cultural musical duo known as In Side Out.
As a result of his life as a cultural ambassador in China, Mark was awarded the 2011-2013 Great Wall Friendship Award, the 2014 National Friendship Award, the 2014 Favorite Foreign Teacher of Chinese College Students. In 2016 he was named an honorary citizen of the Huai’an, Jiangsu for his contributions in promoting the hometown of China’s first premier, Zhou Enlai. In the spring of 2016, because of his special contributions to China, Mark received his Chinese permanent residency.
