Couple's Retreat Garden is surrounded by a canal at three sides and with one street-facing facade. There is a large residential complex in the middle of the layout, with two gardens lying to the east and the west respectively. The white wall and black tiles, combined with bridges and rivers offer you the scene of Jiangnan water town

The layout of one residential complex with two gardens is quite unique and outstanding among many classic gardens in Suzhou. Tourists can only experience its exquisiteness and fancy by personal visit.

After touring around the garden, we will appreciate and enjoy Suzhou Kun Opera in Double Chiu House, which located in the second floor of the main hall of east garden. Double Chiu House takes the rectangle shape and faces to sunshine at three sides. It is called because the sunshine and moonshine can both shine in the building. As the most spectacular place to admire the sun and the moon when tasting the tea, Double Chiu House is the favorite place for watching Kun Opera of ancient scholars.

The leader actor of Kun Opera performer is professor Lv Chengfang who got the fame of “the best performer of Kun Opera”. Through graceful movement, she carries forward the tradition of ancient poetry and common speech with very high literary value.

You can experience the beautiful ornate lyrics and the delicate performance through the representative work of The Peony Pavilion. The perfect combination of Double Chiu House in Couple’s Retreat Garden and the Kun Opera performance demonstrated by Professor Lv Chengfang will definitely show you an unforgettable culture feast.

After enjoying the Kun Opera, take the sampan which is only used in Suzhou water towns. Enjoy authentic Suzhou food in Hovle Mansion Club and Hotel Suzhou which are renovated from an old mansion with history of hundreds of years. Walk along the historical and cultural street ---Pingjiang Road after lunch. Pingjiang Road is a historical water alley that located in the northeastern Suzhou ancient city. The length of this road is 1,606 meters and it is still well-preserved with white walls and black roofs built along the stone road, locals especially the old walking leisurely, the scene here shows a traditional Suzhou local life.

Get a first-hand experience of Suzhou embroidery culture in Silk Experience Center. Learn how to distinguish the true and fake silk and the embroidery technique, and how to do the handwork under the guide of the embroider.

Visit Suzhou Zhuangyuan Museum, which located in the former residence of Pan Shi’ en.  It shows the city’s unique culture of zhuangyuan through the exhibition of time-honored precious relics and antiques

Go and visit the former residence of Fan Yanqiao and enjoy the Su style afternoon tea. Fan Yanqiao is a famous scholar of great versatility in Jiangnan, like poem, film, novel, and paintings. The former residence of Fan Yanqiao has been renovated into an experience place for afternoon tea with Su style. Grab some coffee or tea, and other desserts which you like.
