Sponge Cities, Small Blocks, and Complete Streets: The Future of Urbanization in China
Population pressures, traffic congestion, sea level rise and floods are threatening Chinese cities. How can we respond to these conditions? This talk will discuss some approaches, advocating for compact, pedestrian-oriented, and environmentally-friendly development.

Stefan Al is a Dutch architect and Associate Professor of Urban Design at the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Al’s books about Asian urbanization include Factory Towns of South China, Village in the City, Mall City, and he has a forthcoming book about Las Vegas, The Strip. He is currently co-authoring Transport and Places, plus working on a book about adapting cities to sea level rise. His international career has included work as a practicing architect on the 2,000-feet high Canton Tower in Guangzhou, and as an advisor to governments including Hong Kong.
