Yale Day of Service and Community Picnic 

on Saturday, May 13th, 2017

 All-day event starting at 9am, followed by late lunch. 

Open to Yalies and friends of Yale. 

Launched in 2009, the Global Yale Day of Service is one of a number of service opportunities for Yale alumni to lead by sharing their time and talents to make a difference. This year, the Beijing Day of Service will visit Migrant Worker's Home (工友之家), a nonprofit organization found in 2002 to provide services to migrant workers in Beijing. We will spend the entire morning learning about Migrant Worker's Home and their mission and events and ways we can contribute. There will be a bus to pick volunteers up at Agricultural Exhibition Center at 9am to take us to their headquarter in Pinggu and drop us off at Chaoyang Park at 2:00pm, where we will enjoy a late picnic lunch provided by the Yale Club of Beijing. 

Schedule
8:45am – Meet up at Agricultural Exhibition Center (We will notify those who've signed up of the exact meeting point.)
9:00am – Bus leaves from Agricultural Exhibition Center

10:00am - Arrive at Migrant Worker's Home Headquarter 

10:15am - Orientation and Introduction of Migrant Worker's Home 

11:00am - Clean Up and Beautify One of Their Camp Sites

12:00pm - Walking Tour of Orchard and Adoption of Peach Trees 

1:00pm - Depart for Chaoyang Park 

2:00pm - Drop Off at Chaoyang Park

2:30pm - Picnic at Chaoyang Park (Include a brief introduction of Hanglai Village Rehabilitation Project.) 

Signup Details
Please register by noon on Thursday noon, 5/11／2017. No skills required. Children are welcome as long as accompanied by parents. 

You are also welcome to bring: homemade food that won't go bad, frisbee, picnic blanket, badminton rackets, etc. You can note them when you sign up.

About Hanglai Village Rehabilitation Project
Hanglai is facing the problems typical to heritage villages in extreme poverty. Many villages have been harmed, environmentally and culturally, in the name of development. In this project, we reverse the government/developer-assign-planner/architect order. Serve for China (NPO founded by Yale alumnus Yuefei Qin) together with WEI Architects (foundedby Yale alumna Na Wei) initiated the rehabilitation program ourselves. Our NPO fellows moved to and live in the villages. We discover the local resources and look for the most proper methods. We try to give the village a responsible and sustainable financial plan with related thoughtful physical design. We promote our program to the government, developers and organizations for funding and supports. Our aim is to really help this place and these people. We also want this project to become a model for many other heritage villages with similar dilemma.
