In the 1980s, Zhang Lijia worked as a teenager in a factory producing rockets. Today, she is a journalist and social commentator. She taught herself English during her time at the factory, secretly readingJane Eyreand other novels during political meetings. Ms. Zhang is one of the few social commentators from China who writes in English for an international audience, contributing to theGuardian,Newsweekand theNew York Times. She has written two books in English: a memoirSocialism is Great!and the novelLotuswhich explores prostitution in China.
