The Harvard Club of Shanghai Speaker Series, in collaboration with the Harvard Center Shanghai, is delighted to bring to you this timely talk:
A “perfect storm” occurs when several forces that previously had been developing independently come together and create a force far stronger than before. This year’s American election has been such a perfect storm. Four longtime social trends in US society have come together this year, producing an unprecedented situation with not only the candidacy of Trump but the unexpected challenge from Sanders produced a situation of leading candidates standing outside their party’s mainstream. Steve Kelman will analyze these four social trends and how they have influenced American public policy debate. He will provide some insights on US politics and political culture that go beyond the headlines. The presentation will center on what this year’s election says about American society, but he will briefly discuss the role of China in the campaign.
