Digital music composition workshop

As part of the 2014 Meridian Music and Film MiniFest, an innovative music creation workshop for adults will be taking place on November 1^st at Meridian Space, co-organised with French-based organisations Les Agents Réunis and Ensemble de musique interactive, with strong support from the French Embassy in Beijing.

"Live Discovery"is a workshop providing an introduction to the use of music-making techniques and instruments based on cutting-edge, world-class software (such as GarageBand, Idensity, MUSY, or DM1)and tablet computers.

Participants will be led through the fundamental aspects of creating, recording and editing digital music through various sound processing techniques on lightweight and powerful tablets available to the general public (such as iPads), and then include such musical threads into the greater scope of a live performance.

This workshop will take place on the afternoon preceeding a improvised live music performance, that same evening, at Meridian Space, by artists Jacopo Baboni Schilingi and Meng Qi.

The workshop attendees will start off by listening to various sound elements which the two musicians will be using during the concert; Gaia Maffezzoli will then provide some advice on how to create new sounds and tunes through the use of digital and tactile instruments. Finally, participants will get the occasion of hearing their musical sequences integrated into the framework of the live performance itself, a few hours later.

This highly innovative workshop series is an occasion for everyone to discover and express their personal musical creativity in a spontaneous, intuitive and digital way, through the use of sequencers, controllers, and touch instruments.

ABOUT THE TEACHER:

After obtaining a degree in Piano and Composition at the Conservatory of Milan, Gaia Maffezzoli has dedicated herself to artistic research and musical composition, with aspecial focus on the use of digital tools as a support to creation.

ABOUT THE PERFORMERS:

A stalwart pillar and pioneer of the Beijing electronic music scene, who fell into electronic music at age 14, Meng Qi is particularly noted for his self-made analog instruments. He also produces new audio software and customs electronics, teaches at the Beijing Contemporary Music Institute, and holds lectures and workshops at the Beijing Maker Space, Shanghai XinCheJian, the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, and the Central Academy of Fine Arts.

Jacopo Baboni Schilingi, too, started off early: at age 15, he was already composing theatrical music in Milan. Since then, this prolific artist and musicologist has participated in dozens of music festivals around the world, and won many international musical composition accolades, including a Special Mention at the prestigious Prix Italia awards in 2006. His music has been performed by orchestras and ensembles in Italy, France and elsewhere. Since 1999, he heads the Composition department of the Montbéliard Conservatory of Music, and he is also the Artistic Director of the trail-blazing Ensemble de musique interactive.

受法国大使馆、中法50周年赞助委员会的支持，本周六来自法国互动音乐团的盖娅将在时差空间举办数字音乐创作工作坊（成人），想成为受到法国老师的音乐训练、成为数字音乐创作达人的同学们绝对不要错过！

盖 娅•玛菲佐理不仅将让学员实时参与到一场数字音乐演出的创作过程中，当晚由中国艺术家孟奇和法国作曲家（哈佛大学音乐系客座教授）Jacopo Baboni Schilingi献上的电子乐、合成音乐和互动音乐演奏，将以当天学员创作出来的作品为开场再次创作即兴音乐，将持续产生音乐并与观众互动。

本次工作坊中，参与者将先聆听当晚两位艺术家将使用于演奏过程中的声音元素。此后，盖娅•玛菲佐理会亲自引导各位利用数码或实体乐器即兴创作出新声音。

【关于老师】

盖娅•玛菲佐理（Gaia Maffezzoli） ，一直有激发青少年的艺术创作的热情。自从在米兰音乐学院获得钢琴和作曲学位，她一直致力于适用于年轻人的艺术和音乐作品研究中，聚焦于如何利用数字化工具促进艺术创作。目前，她同时任教于法国蒙贝利亚尔音乐学院的数码音乐创作系，以及瑞士卢加诺音乐学院的音乐创作系，并是“法国互动音乐团”的成员。该组织的音乐家们都热衷于将乐器、电子产品以及观众的现场参与融合起来，制作实时的互动音乐。

【关于演出嘉宾】

孟奇是个有着多重身份的非典型音乐家。他不仅是电子音乐艺术家，还自己制作合成器。他是北京电子音乐舞台上最出名的乐手之一。他曾经完成了两张专辑《山水恋》、《山水颤》。他定期在以下场所举办讲座和演出：北京创客空间、上海新车间、创客嘉年华、上海音乐学院，天津美术学院，中央美术学院，北京现代音乐学校，北京杂家。

Jacopo Baboni Schilingi来自“技艺”音乐领域，身兼数种头衔哈佛大学音乐系的客座教授、阿尔克-塞南皇家盐场合作艺术家，法国音乐与声学协调研究院驻院作曲家，PRISMA年会财产管理人，上海电子音乐周合作艺人。他将创作和互动放在最重要的位置,是同时代作曲家中最具有代表性的人之一，无论是在被称为传统的音乐学院和音乐厅，还是在汇集了影像、建筑、与观众互动的跨领域艺术表达的新舞台上。
