Yale Day of Service

Saturday, May 9th, 2015

We invite alumni, family, and friends in Shanghai to join thousands of other Yalies around the world to come out and support your local communities. Get involved! This year, we'll work with Stepping Stones to engage migrant children in Shanghai’s primary schools. This is a wonderful opportunity to meet, reconnect, and bond with one another while gaining perspectives on a different side of China.

Date: Saturday, May 9, 2015
Venue: Xinqiao Migrant Community Center (Songjiang district)

Cost: 150 RMB (supports the nonprofit's operations and includes transport, orientation, training as well as lunch)

The center is located at 10 minutes walk from Xinqiao station. There is a local fast train that connects Xinqiao with Shanghai South Station (上海南站), which only takes 10 minutes. We can all meet at Shanghai South Station with the Stepping Stones staff at 9:10am. A train departs 上海南站 at 9:40am.

Schedule:
9:10am: Meet at 上海南站
9:40am: Train departs  上海南站
10:00am: Arrive at Xinqiao center
10:15am-12:00pm: Orientation & Training
12:00pm-1:00pm: Lunch
1:00pm-2:30pm: Activity with the migrant children
2:40pm: Leave the Center
3:20pm: Back to Shanghai South Station

About Stepping Stones

Stepping Stones is a not-for-profit organization registered both in Hong Kong and mainland China (Shanghai) with a mission to improve the education and general welfare of disadvantaged children in China. Stepping Stones works with expatriate and local Chinese volunteers to teach English in Shanghai’s migrant schools and community centers. The organization currently recruits, trains, coordinates, and supports around 200 volunteers to teach 4,000 students in 15 migrant schools and community centres in Shanghai. Stepping Stones also regularly take groups of volunteers to teach English to children in rural schools outside of Shanghai and run other charitable projects including the provision of eye care.

Through Stepping Stones, volunteers get to know another side of China’s society and to contribute in a meaningful way to the education of under-privileged children.
