WRITING FICTION WORKSHOP

XU XI
Saturday, March 24, 13:15 – 15:15 | 250 RMB

All stories, we hear, have a beginning, middle and end.  We writers can come up with great beginnings and sometimes even know how we want a story to end.  But the REAL challenge of completing any piece of creative work is sorting through that “muddle in the middle” so that the beginning & end actually accomplish what you set out to write.  In this generative workshop, Xu will lead you through some writing exercises to think through what that “muddle in the middle” needs to encompass.  Come with an open mind, prepared to write (and read a little).   If you like, send in advance some of the beginning and ending sentences or paragraphs you’ve thought about (no more than 150 words).  We’ll use these (anonymously) for the writing exercises.  Email xuxi@xuxiwriter.com with your beginnings & endings but no later than Saturday March 17.

Xu Xi is author of twelve books, most recently a memoir Dear Hong Kong: An Elegy for a City (Penguin, 2017), the novel That Man in Our Lives (C&R Press, 2016) Interruptions (Hong Kong Univ. Museum & Art Gallery/Columbia Univ. Press, 2016), a collaborative ekphrastic essay collection with photography by David Clarke. She is co-founder of Authors at Large and fiction editor at Tupelo Press in Massachusetts. In 2018, she was named Faculty Co-Director of a new, low-residency International MFA in Creative Writing & Literary Translation at Vermont College of Fine Arts in Montpelier.  An Indonesian-Chinese Hong Kong native and U.S. citizen, she currently lives between New York and Hong Kong. @xuxiwriter
