David Shambaugh, one of the world's leading thinkers on Chinese affairs, will give his third book talk at The Bookworm on June 28. Will China be successful in implementing a new wave of transformational reforms to make it the world's leading superpower? Or will its leaders shy away from the drastic changes required because it puts the regime's power at risk? Might China move down a more liberal or even democratic path? Or will the country emerge as an authoritarian and aggressive superstate? In his latest book, China's Future, Shambaugh argues that all of these are possibilities, but they depend on key decisions yet to be made. What are those decisions, and how will various pressures, both internal and external, steer this country's decision-makers?
