THE PEOPLE’S REPUBLIC OF DESIRE
Wu Hao, in conversation with Melinda Liu

Sunday, March 24, 8:00 PM
60 RMB | BW 24-5 | The Bookworm – TICKETS

Documentary film maker Hao Wu will discuss the making of a People’s Republic of Desire, a real-life Black Mirror story about searching for fame, fortune and human connection online. Viewers are introduced to a digital universe where young performers can earn a fortune singing, dancing or doing talk shows to live, interactive audiences of tens of thousands. He has also directed Beijing or Bust, which follows the experiences of six American-born Chinese who make Beijing their home; and The Road to Fame, which portrays Chinese students rehearsing for the hit musical. He produced the documentary Nowhere to Call Home: A Tibetan in Beijing, written and directed by Jocelyn Ford, which follows the story of a destitute Tibetan widow who tries to give her child to a passing American journalist, drawing the foreigner into a violent family feud. Hao Wu previously held management roles at Alibaba, TripAdvisor and Excite@Home. His documentary films have received support from Ford Foundation JustFilms, ITVS, Sundance, Tribeca and international broadcasters, and have won numerous awards including the Grand Jury Award at SXSW. In conversation with Beijing Newsweek correspondent Melinda Liu. In association with the Royal Asiatic Society, Beijing.
