THE PEOPLE’S REPUBLIC OF DESIRE
Wu Hao, in conversation with Melinda Liu
Sunday, March 24, 8:00 PM
60 RMB | BW 24-5 | The Bookworm – TICKETS
Documentary film maker Hao Wu will discuss the making of a People’s Republic of Desire, a real-life Black Mirror story about searching for fame, fortune and human connection online. Viewers are introduced to a digital universe where young performers can earn a fortune singing, dancing or doing talk shows to live, interactive audiences of tens of thousands. He has also directed Beijing or Bust, which follows the experiences of six American-born Chinese who make Beijing their home; and The Road to Fame, which portrays Chinese students rehearsing for the hit musical. He produced the documentary Nowhere to Call Home: A Tibetan in Beijing, written and directed by Jocelyn Ford, which follows the story of a destitute Tibetan widow who tries to give her child to a passing American journalist, drawing the foreigner into a violent family feud. Hao Wu previously held management roles at Alibaba, TripAdvisor and Excite@Home. His documentary films have received support from Ford Foundation JustFilms, ITVS, Sundance, Tribeca and international broadcasters, and have won numerous awards including the Grand Jury Award at SXSW.
