It is common for writers to set science fiction stories in fictional universes, but equally common for them to pick up an existent region/city/territory as the background, like Kim Stanley Robinson did in NY2140 or Hao Jingfang did in Folding Beijing. How do those places differ in reality and in science fiction? What do writers do to create the disparities and why? In this panel, science fiction writers will talk about the secret of turning a familiar place into a unique stage.
