"Fantastic Planet" by René Laloux, 1973
25th August, 2020
It is the 12th installment of the 4M Impact of technology on society and this week we take on natural rights of humans and other beings. Director René Laloux imagines in explicit detail a world where humans are no longer the apex beings in their natural world. The impact of that terminus a quo impacts how they interact with each other and the rest of their world.
Plot
In the faraway future, the massive blue humanoid Draags have brought human beings from Earth to the planet Ygam. Here the Draags maintain a technologically and spiritually advanced society where they consider humans(Oms) animals, and keep some as pets, others live in the wilderness and are occasionally slaughtered by the Draags - proclaiming the wish to control their population. Draags have much longer lifespans than Oms but reproduce much less. In this backdrop we follow the life of Terr and Tiwa whose lives are inextricably linked by their shared experiences but pulled apart by the way their society is organized. The impact of that relationship grows to have an enormous impact on both their worlds in ways neither of them could not have expected.

Fantastic Planet takes place on the planet Ygam, where the plot takes place. Here some gargantuan blue humanoid aliens brought human people from Earth to be kept as animals. In this advanced society, some of them live in the wilderness, others are kept as pets.
The "fantastic planet" or "wild planet" is the way Ygam call their moon, where their population, the Draags, go for meditation. Mindfulness is presented as the main difference between aliens and humans, especially when people from Earth find the way to duplicate alien technology.
"There is no understanding without justice and no justice without understanding"
