Much has been written about the Confucian revival in China. Much less discussed is another strand of ancient Chinese philosophy which arguably has much more relevance to political developments in the People's Republic: Legalism. This talk will draw upon the writings of Shang Yang and Han Feizi to analyze recent efforts to centralize political power and control debate.

Sam Crane is a Professor of Political Science at Williams College in Massachusetts, USA, where he teaches courses in ancient Chinese philosophy, contemporary Chinese politics and East Asian international relations. His most recent book, Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Dao: Ancient Chinese Thought in Modern American Life (Wiley, 2013) uses concepts drawn from classical Confucian and Daoist texts to analyze contemporary social and political issues.
