Basic Soul Unit is not your average techno artist. The Canadian DJ & Producer has released on seminal labels such as Dekmantel, Ostgut Ton & Mathematics. He will make his China debut at the Cutt. Records Release Party at Oil Club. 

Cutt. Records is dedicated to pushing the local house & techno underground, namely by pairing local releases with international guest artists. Starting with two new EPs by Shanghai Ultra & Shenzhen's Tayta, an EP by label founder Purple Key, and a compilation to follow later this summer.

ARTISTS

BASIC SOUL UNIT

Stuart Li aka Basic Soul Unit has been steadily making his mark in underground electronic music circles since his first release in 2003. Stuart grew up listening to Toronto’s college radio stations and attended after hours parties playing underground house music. He later worked at Cosmos Records store which dealt vintage Jazz, Soul, Funk, Latin, Brazilian, Disco, House & Hip Hop to crate diggers both local and from abroad. Reflecting his diverse interest in music, Stuart's house & techno productions can swing from lush and soulful to crunchy and jacking . He has released and remixed music on respected labels such as Nonplus+, Dolly, Philpot, Mathematics, Mule Electronic, Versatile, Ostgut Ton, Créme Organization & New Kanada. The end of 2012 saw the the release of Basic Soul Unit’s first album “Motional Response” on Chicago’s Still Music to great critical acclaim. Cassy recently included 2 of Stuart’s tracks on her Fabric 71 mix CD for Fabric London. 2013 also marks the inaugural ep release of his own label Lab.our which he started with long time friend Jason Ulrich.

SHANGHAI ULTRA

Shanghai Ultra is China's most influential underground techno DJ since relocating to Shanghai in 2005. His reputation as militantly anti-commercial precedes him in China where his sound has rocked countless dance floors time and time again. Resident for 9 years at Shanghai's legendary Shelter club, he was co-founder of VOID - China's leading underground house and techno night for over 10 years. The monthly Void Shanghai event is very widely recognized as the best of its kind in China. SH Ultra and his Void crew have been a huge influence on Chinese techno scene. VOID was the first regular party in China dedicated to proper techno when it was launched in 2007, bringing many seminal artists to China for the first time including Juan Atkins, Robert Hood, Surgeon, DJ Bone, and Neil Landstrumm, Underground Resistance and Token Belgium. Ultra's challenging and provocative sets have defined the techno scene in China. Ten years ago minimal dominated dance floors, yet SH Ultra remained ahead of the curve, pioneering a dark and hard techno sound. A decade later everyone is playing this style in underground clubs all over China every weekend. Yet his powerful and uncompromising DJing, intuitive understanding of rhythm and refusal to follow trends keeps him ahead of the curve. An outspoken critic of the culture of DJ-worship, the masked DJ  is even better known as a music producer and for live hardware performances using Roland's iconic Tr-909 drum machine and SH-101 synth.

As a DJ and producer, Colombian native Tayta is able to move between and blend genres seamlessly. He has performed in over 15 major cities across China at top alternative venues such as DADA, Celia, Sector, NASA, Loopy and XXX. Having played alongside reggae legend Johnny Osbourne, tech house DJ Technasia, and underground club queen Madame X, Tayta’s groove and versatility continues to push the boundaries of the music scene in China. “His unique ability to keep people dancing all the way through song after song is unmatched.” – CityWeekendShenzhen. 

Tayta currently lives in Shenzhen, China where he holds residency at Baia and hosts the city’s hottest funk party every Friday.

PURPLE KEY

On any given night, Purple Key is probably locked away in his studio working his magic on synths and keys. Hailing from Alexandria and residing in China, he is a true representative of Chicago house music. Purple Key started his musical journey as a producer and DJ in the late 90’s. His first EP - Retro Green - was released on London’s Crossworld Records. His musical style alters between soulful, vocal driven tunes and harder, rough acid tracks. Recently he joined the acclaimed Deeplomatic Recordings along with Chicago & Detroit house legends such as Paul Johnson, Terrence Parker, and Gene Hunt, to name a few. TRIBAL JOHN

TRIBES is an underground DJ from Manchester, England and has been holding techno parties in Guangzhou for some time. In the UK he was the co-founder of cult favourite underground music festival HOOFER DOOFER as well as holding residence at the REHAB parties in Liverpool. A solid foundation in electronic music came from growing up in the Northwest of England and in his youth was inspired by clubs such as BUGGED OUT (Manchester), VOODOO (Liverpool), ATOMIC JAM (Birmingham) and ORBIT (Leeds) His musical influences are wide ranging from the Detroit techno masters such as JEF MILLS, to the British electro and techno giants such as DAVE CLARKE to more recent genre bending electronic artists such as BOK BOK and OBJEKT. He is now running the HOODOO ‘true techno’ events in Guangzhou, specialising in percussive and textured techno as well as full synth 80’s homages. TRIBES also hosts the monthly techno podcast for South China, the HARDWARE SHOW on PHOENIX RADIO.

BITING EYE

Biting Eye aka Ben Bridges is an Australian DJ/producer who plays live acid techno and acid house with vintage analogue synthesizers and drum machines.  Biting Eye has toured around the world for more than 15 years.  He has played at music festivals and clubs to crowds as large as 60,000 people including the world renowned Big Day Out (Australia), Rainbow Serpent Festival (Australia), Earthcore (Australia), Pemberton Music Festival (Canada) and Clockenflap (Hong Kong).  Biting Eye's live performances are full of energy, with old school acid house combined with harder techno. He is also is the founder of the TB-303 Owner's Club, which includes many famous DJs and producers from around the world.  Ben is also the label boss of Hong Kong based Acidchicken Records.  Acidchicken Records has released music from DJs and producers including USA, Germany, UK, Australia, Canada, Italy, Malta, Finland, Russia, Japan, and Hong Kong.  Acidchicken Records has released exclusive albums and compilations of exclusive tracks from some of the scene's best known artists and DJs across the globe.  Ben's compilation albums have grown in popularity over the past 3 years registering more than 120,000 downloads worldwide.

RHAMPTON

Rhampton is one of the nost refined techno acts to be found in South China. Detroit style techno mixed with effortless skill, the Guangzhou based Brit is one of the best dancefloor manipulators you can find playing groovy, funky, hard 135bpm techno that's impossible to stand still for. He has been Hoodoo's resident star DJ for many years and has played in countries all over the world. 

QUEST

Quest starting throwing underground events events in Shenzhen in 2008. He founded Fresh Crew in 2010, Muzikbox & Honey Lake Music Festival in 2014, First Fridays in 2015, Mettasonic Recordings in 2017, and co-founded Cutt. Records in 2018, supporting all forms of music along the way. A record collector for life and always dedicated to the cutting edge of electronic dance music, he loves building sound systems in the Jamaican tradition. Quest specializes in manually mixing a variety of genres: drum & bass, jungle, reggae, hip hop, soul, pop, disco, and also dives deep down the rabbit hole of deep house & techno.

Video artist, Niv, delivers visuals that get you feeling all sorts of things. Her style is vibrant, playful, and experimental, creating an atmosphere that keeps you intrigued and dancing. She’s fresh talent, but has already supported top acts including DJ SS, Mijk van Dijk, Josef K, Prototypes and Opuswerk. Now based in Shenzhen, Niv has previously found home in Sydney, New Delhi and San Francisco. No matter where, she is blessed to find muses that inspire and support her.

VSLZR

VJing / Mapping / Multimedia Art

Visual artist and image manipulator in real time (VJ), starting in 2008, developing visual sense stimulation in the electronic scene mostly in the underground movement, VSLZR start to experiment with different visuals proposals and images making interventions in electronics venues and parties like the Acid Resistance Festivals and Bogotrax in Colombia. Nowadays VSLZR join the underground scene and parties in the south of China sharing and creating acid atmosphere.
